Summer MCN Practices to begin June 23rd

I hope that everyone has had a good spring. The weather has been terrific; it’s hard to believe we were skiing well into April this last season. Summer will be arriving shortly and the Maine Coast Nordic Junior Ski Team summer session will be starting on June 23rd. The Summer MCN session will conclude at the start of the fall sports season.

Maine Coast Nordic is a program that provides additional training support to high school ski racers. The program is managed by the Coastal Nordic Ski Club. Participation in the Summer MCN program and our other periodic sessions throughout the year serve as a great complement to high school ski racing. This program has served as a catalyst in developing successful high school ski racers in Southern Maine.

The goals of the Maine Coast Nordic ski program are to:

*Have Fun
*Teach young skiers good lifestyle habits
* Help skiers develop a passion for Cross Country Ski racing

This summer, we will have five to six practices a week. Practices will consist of dryland training that includes trail running and strength training. Additionally, roller-ski training is performed consistently which helps in develop effective technique. A preliminary practice schedule has been established:

Monday: 7:00am-8:30am
Tuesday: 4:00pm-5:30pm
Wednesday: 7:00am-8:30am
Thursday: 4:00pm-5:30pm
Friday: 7:00am-8:30am
Saturday: 7:30am-9:00am

We realize that there are summer jobs, other programs, and transportation logistics to contend with. We’ll try to be as accommodating as possible to meet everyone’s needs. For example, if we don’t see participation for afternoon practices, we may move them to the morning (last summer, our greatest participation was in the morning.)

Meghan Burns, will be the primary summer MCN coach again this year. Meghan is a Yarmouth native who skied for St. Lawrence University. For the last two seasons she has been an assistant with the University of New Hampshire ski team. She has a lot of great experience and is a tremendous asset to the program.

Something new this summer will be a MCN training weekend that will take the place during the last weekend in June. Details are being worked out but we plan on having a weekend dedicated to having fun, hiking, roller-skiing, trail running, and maybe some mountain biking. This will be a good opportunity for the kids to familiarize themselves with each other.

There will be an information meeting /signup session for Maine Coast Nordic and the summer session on Saturday, June 14th from 9:00am-10:00am at Twin Brook. We’ll meet near the new building.
