Week of 10/20 Update

The SMBC roller-ski race on Sunday was a success. Ian Moore, Nate Niles, Sam & Tara Humphries, Matt Goldstein, Erik D’Agostino, Scott & Melanie Ross, Molly Susla, and Sarah Abramson all participated in the event. The senior race, for anyone high school age and above, was highlighted with Nate Niles with Sam Humphries coming in first and third respectively in the 10k event. The middle school race, 5k distance, was won by Ian Moore. Ian beat out Yarmouth middle school Nordic icon Jackson Hall in a sprint finish. For many, the race was the first 10k ski event ever.

The most enthusiastic Cumberland Youth skier ever, Tim Adams, showed up 15 minutes before the race having never roller-skied. In the fifteen minutes prior to the race he learned how to rollerski. Expecting to see some blood from Tim at some point during the race, I loaned him my classical poles that were six inches over his head. He completed the race beautifully, no blood, all smiles. Expect more from this warrior in the coming years.

It was a beautiful day and the low-key event was enjoyed by all.

This week we will practice on:

Tuesday, 10/21 3:30-5:00 at Twin Brook: Classic Roller-ski Distance
Thursday, 10/23 3:30-5:00 at Twin Brook: Dryland strength
Sunday, 10/26 8:00-10:00 at Pineland: long classic roller-ski

For the next few weeks here are a few dates to remember:

10/24: deadline for letting me know about the Canada camp during the Thanksgiving week, see last weeks update.

11/2/08: Bowdoin Duathlon. This is a run/rollerski event that is great fun and an awesome workout. If you are sore and cannot run, pair up with someone who can. Here is the race link: http://www.nensa.net/sched&result/current_sched2.php?ID=634

11/22/08: Depart to Canada for session 1 Thanksgiving camp.

12/20-12/21/08: Eastern Cup race #1, Stowe, VT, Trapp Family Lodge. You may want to think about accommodations. Call the Stowe Motel for a cheap but clean room.
